Bloomberg reports that new wind power costs less than new coal. Hooray! Wind turbines do much less damage to the environment, wildlife, and people than coal mines, while being more efficient. For example, a new wind farm off the coast of New Jersey could generate power for 10,000 homes. And no mountains need to be blown up in the process.
My favorite wind turbines are those that don’t harm bats. Technology Review says that offshore wind farms are safe for birds and bats.
Another way to help bats avoid wind turbine-related deaths… paint the turbines purple! Insects are attracted to the white blades, and painting them purple doesn’t attract as many bugs or as many bats.
In Ohio, there are extra incentives for generating your own power through wind. Check it out.
